Forbidden subgraphs implying the MIN-algorithm gives a maximum independent set

چکیده
The well-known greedy algorithm MIN for 6nding a maximal independent set in a graph G is based on recursively removing the closed neighborhood of a vertex which has (in the currently existing graph) minimum degree. We give a forbidden induced subgraph condition under which algorithm MIN always results in 6nding a maximum independent set of G, and hence yields the exact value of the independence number of G in polynomial time. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Forbidden subgraphs and MIN-algorithm for independence number
The well-known greedy algorithm MIN for nding a maximal independent set in a graph G is based on recursively removing the closed neighborhood of a vertex which has (in the currently existing graph) minimum degree. We give a forbidden induced subgraph condition under which algorithm MIN always results in nding a maximum independent set of G, and hence yields the exact value of the independence n...
متن کاملExtending the Max Algorithm for maximum independent set
The maximum independent set problem is an NP-hard problem. In this paper, we consider Algorithm MAX, which is a polynomial time algorithm for finding a maximal independent set in a graph G. We present a set of forbidden induced subgraphs such that Algorithm MAX always results in finding a maximum independent set ofG. We also describe two modifications of Algorithm MAX and sets of forbidden indu...
متن کاملPacking r-Cliques in Weighted Chordal Graphs
In Hell et al. (2004), we have previously observed that, in a chordal graph G, the maximum number of independent r -cliques (i.e., of vertex disjoint subgraphs of G, each isomorphic to Kr , with no edges joining any two of the subgraphs) equals the minimum number of cliques of G that meet all the r -cliques of G. When r = 1, this says that chordal graphs have independence number equal to the cl...
متن کاملA note on an induced subgraph characterization of domination perfect graphs
Let γ(G) and ι(G) be the domination and independent domination numbers of a graph G, respectively. Introduced by Sumner and Moorer [23], a graph G is domination perfect if γ(H) = ι(H) for every induced subgraph H ⊆ G. In 1991, Zverovich and Zverovich [26] proposed a characterization of domination perfect graphs in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs. Fulman [15] noticed that this characterizat...
متن کاملClique-perfectness of complements of line graphs
The clique-transversal number τc(G) of a graph G is the minimum size of a set of vertices meeting all the cliques. The clique-independence number αc(G) of G is the maximum size of a collection of vertex-disjoint cliques. A graph is clique-perfect if these two numbers are equal for every induced subgraph of G. Unlike perfect graphs, the class of clique-perfect graphs is not closed under graph co...
